Shere Hite Reader- Seven Stories Press, U.S - (2004) |
|
|
'The Shere Hite Reader
presents wide-ranging analysis on the individual and society from
a renowned thinker on psychosexual development. The book includes
new science in addition to previously published material, reflecting
Hite's three decades of work probing the roots of human identity
through questionnaires and theory. For the first time Hite formalizes
her thinking on male adolescence, that boys feel tortured by the
new social role they are forced to assume at puberty requiring a
show of superiority toward females. In new detail Hite advances
her understanding that sex is political, linking the expectation
on women to achieve orgasm through coitus with broader patterns
of oppression. Hite discusses new research on female adolescence,
challenging the “virgin” hymen concept, and documenting
that sexual awakening often precedes puberty. Hite also argues that
pornography misrepresents male sexuality (not to mention female
sexuality), depicting it as singular and silly instead of “full
of intriguing, nuanced behavior involving the entire body, not just
the penis.”'

'Hite turns
her pen on discrimination in the boardroom [and] offers a way forward.
Hite's thesis is that there is a bedrock of myths that society installs
in us at an early age. No matter how psychology tries to change them,
it addresses only surface layers of our belief system. What are needed
are basic commands to our central control panel - what Dr. Hite calls
the 'underwater frescoes of our minds.'..offers a way to.. change
our underlying psychology.' (Times Business)
-
Also includes a mini-survey of corporate attitudes
toward women in executive jobs, as well as discussions of sexual
harassment and other gender stereotypes in today's corporate boardroom
workscape, plus interviews with thirty of the Fortune Global 500
corporate chairmen.
-
- 'The office today is like a blank sheet of paper on which we
can write a new social order', Hite begins.

Hite Report on Female Sexuality
'One of the 100
book of the century' (London Times)
The

The original ground-breaking Hite Report on
Female Sexuality, first published in 1976, is here published with
additional statistics from the UK, Australia and New Zealand.
Caused a storm of controversy at the time, remains cutting
edge today. An antidote to internet and other pornographic or
fictionalised views of female sexuality, especially clear and
to the point re female orgasm. Presents the classic
case for the importance of exterior or clitoral stimulation to
orgasm for women, arguing that the definition of sex should change
long before this point was taken up by philosopher M. Foucault.
'First to say that 'sex' as we know it is a cultural and not a
biological institution...fascinating, eye-opening, rewarding...a
must for everyone, male and female.'

Demonstrates
that most women need clitoral or exterior stimulation for orgasm;
that orgasm is easy and strong for women, given the right stimulation;
that most women have orgasm most easily during masturbation
or clitoral stimulation by hand; that sex as we define it is a cultural
institution, not a biological one, that should be changed to include
the stimulation women desire. 'A useful source of insider
information' (University Review).

Hite Report on Hite - Arcadia Books (2000) (Die Hite
Report en Eigener Sache, (1996) Lubbe) |

Dealing half with her work and
half with her life, here Hite puts her books and personal development
into context, setting the record straight in her own words.
Shere Hite has written an autobiography 'as a way of
signing my name at the end of a series of eight books, before
going on to new territory.' When Hite changed her citizenship
from U.S. to German in 1996, after having written several bestselling
reports on sexuality and private life, she wrote a partial version
of this book published in German. After positive reviews she
went on to write two further books -- Rivales et Amies, Albin
Michel, 1999, and Sex and Business, Financial Times-Pearson,
1999-2000.
This complete version underlines a career that has taken on
controversial, breaking ground issues such as female sexuality,
women's ownership of their own bodies, male sexuality and masculine
psycho-sexual identity, women redefining the emotions of love
and asking 'What is love?', democratization of the family, sexual
harassment and the emerging new social order in offices, and
other topics. Her works are translated into twenty languages,
leaving what Reuters called 'an indelible mark on Western civilization'

New theories about relationships
between women. People say, 'Women are 51% of the population;
if they want change, why don't they vote for it??!' This is
a taunt that may have some truth to it, i.e., women need not
all love each other (men surely do not love all other men),
but why women are not forming alliances that create larger institutions?
The thesis proposed here: there is an unidentified taboo on
loyalty between women, covered over by the trivialization of
women and remarks that 'women can never get along'; they are
silly.

Though politicians
today say 'the family is collapsing', 'the family' is becoming
democratized, people are making new choices about how and with
whom to live; the 'traditional family' kept women in a subservient
position, and so today the women want to make their relationship
with a man inside a 'traditional family' more equal, or they
are choosing new kinds of families -- including close-knit groups
or friends, relatives and 'single mother' (mother-child) families.
Also a new analysis of growing
up male puts forth a new theory about how men learn to connect
their erotic feelings and violence to women, during the time
at puberty when they must 'reject their mother' and stop being
'tied to your mother's apron-strings', a 'sissy' or a wimp.
Growing up female puts forth a new icon for girls, since in
the model of the traditional family -- Mary, Jesus and Joseph
-- there is a son but no daughter. Shows that most girls may
not have a hymen, that the concept of 'virginity' may be a culturally
created expectation.
- The study included an analysis of
changes in the family structure now underway, asserting
that 'the family' is not collapsing, rather it is being
transformed; today there are many kinds of families, valid
and good -- not 'sort of ok' -- including 'single mother'
families. The primary part of the work
is 'a new map of childhood development', i.e., an examination
of what it feels like to grow up male or female in a traditional
or semi-traditional family, analysing how people form
their psycho-sexual identities, demonstrating that
today many are having an inner debate with themselves
about whether they believe in the identities they were brought
up with. A map of childhood to replace the old Freudian
categories.

"Published to much acclaim, these reflective
essays by Shere Hite reveal and explore the methodological and
philosophical import of the famous Hite Reports on male and female
sexuality and love and include extensive excerpts from the reports
themselves.
To read this outstanding distillation of Hite's
writings is to see the continuing impact of her prodigious work
over two decades, to hear her views on the issues facing women
as agents of social change, and to be taken to the cutting edge
of current debates on sexual politics."

| The
Divine Comedy of Ariadne and Jupiter -
Peter Owen, (1993);
Plaza y Janes, (1995); Bertrand Brasil,(1996) |
|
|
Bored with Heavenly Baseball,
Ariadne and her magic dog Jupiter fly to Earth. What they find
there delights but also puzzles them. When they start asking
questions, they discover the folly of curiosity...With Jupiter
in tow, Ariadne takes on the Backlash. But when she publishes
her observations, her life becomes Hell on Earth, as the media
protest that they already have the Best of All Possible Worlds.
Luckily, Jupiter spirits Ariadne back
to a Heaven that hosts a club for famous dogs as well as a Heavenly
Debating Society. During a whirlwind of Heavenly Events, Ariadne
seeks Enlightenment from a panoply of historical figures, including
Harry Truman, Vladimir Lenin, Gertrude Stein, George Orwell,
the Pope and Simone de Beauvoir. She becomes best friends with
a Day-Glo Cleopatra, Queen of the Nile. While Ariadne debates
whether Earth can be The Best of All Possible Worlds, Voltaire
soothes his nerves with chocolate bars, and Cleopatra gets it
on with Orwell.
'The Divine Comedy of Ariadne and Jupiter is a fast-paced political
satire combining wit and sensuality by the author of the award-winning
Hite Reports .' (Fay Weldon)

'A landmark redefinition of the female
psyche by women', Dr. Frank Summers, Physicians for Social
Responsibility (recipient 1985 Nobel Peace Prize)
the most controversial of all the Hite
reports, became a cause celebre in the u.s. in 1987-88
with an attack on the cover of time magazine and a committee
of feminist writers formed in Hite's defence
Women have always been told their place
in society is to be the 'caretakers of families', those
who are loving and giving -- taking care of others, especially
husbands and children but also aging parents and other people
generally.
If, for the last 2,000 years, women have
been told they should be giving and loving, now, if women
are claiming the right to define themselves, how are women
themselves defining 'love'? more

Showed the broad range of male
eroticism, contrasted with the limited 'drive for penetration
model' men are told should be their focus; documented male pscho-sexuality,
such as 'why do men want coitus?' and found, among other things,
that most men do not marry the women they most passionately
love, but prefer to stay 'in control' and are proud of their
'rational choice'.
