FEMINIST THEORY

What is feminism? When did it start? What is a feminist? What sort of things do feminists do? What is post-feminism?

These are just some of the many questions asked about Feminism. On this page you will find links to Hite Research Articles about feminism and sexuality, links to other feminist sites and a list of recommended reading for those of you who would like to know more or who are studying feminisms, sociology, psychology, politics, literature and any other issue relating to women through time. Many of Dr. Shere Hite's books are available to download from Hite Research International at an affordable rate. Click here for information on ordering Dr Hite's books for downloading.

It is generally accepted that the second wave of feminism(s) began in the late 1960s. Exceptional women, however, can be found throughout history. As recently as the early 1900s women in many countries were fighting for our right to vote - the so called suffragettes. But history is populated with indomitable women whose actions changed the lives of those around them. Women who spoke out and stepped out of the social restrictions of their time. Much of our understanding of women's lives in the past has been influenced by restricted and limited historical texts. The authors of these texts often projected their own narrow stereotypical views onto their interpretations of the past. This had the effect of reducing women to the Whore - Madonna imagery that was popular in the 1800s. Knowledge and information about women, their lives, thoughts and sexuality were lost. We have hints that women weren't the one-dimensional maidens they were described as being, and literary works such as Chaucer and Shakespeare sometimes depict  interesting,  powerful women - think of Juliet, so overcome by love and lust at 14 that she eloped and, tragically, took her her life rather than live according to her parents' strictures. Even earlier the  tales of courtly love also demonstrate the power of a woman's sexuality. The early Greek tragedies of Agamemnon or Homer's Iliad are filled with women as rulers, deities and  renowned for their wisdom, sexuality and beauty - think of Penelope or Helen of Troy. The male dominated Church and State admittedly have made use of this to proclaim women as dangerous, even demonic at times. How powerful our sexuality must be!

Yet much of this information has been buried under the battles and political power struggles of male dominated history and religious traditions that tried to categorise women into saints or sinners. The women of the last century and in particular the last thirty years, have begun to fill in the gaps - to explore what is women's sexuality, culture, politics and philosophy. We have begun to rediscover the beauty and power of being women and uncover the many women who link us back through time to the earliest feminists.

Feminist theory is as varied and vast as the women who work with it. It covers a myriad of areas from sexuality to philosophy, from the politics of the home to politics of the world. Yet there is something that runs through it - an acceptance and understanding that there is more than one way to see the world and that for too long we have been submitted to a way that recognises only men as the power holders and the truth sayers.

London Times March 16 2000 - The Hite Report on Hite  -Arcadia Books

Speaking up for women has a high price. You might have expect Shere Hite to become a media darling. She had everything going for her; blond hair, beautiful face, model figure, impeccable academic qualifications, apparent confidence and she wrote about sex and relationships, more

Program Corporation of America  - overview of Dr Hite's work and writings

A Cultural Historian, Shere Hite is one of the most celebrated feminist thinkers and experts on human relationships and sexual behaviour in the 20th century. more

What is a woman’s ‘sexual nature’?  (Dr. S. Hite)

No one has, it seems, ever asked this question. Nor has any research shown evidence of what a ‘female sexual nature’ could be (nor could it, since all human beings grow up in society, thus their ‘nature’ is culturally influenced). Women’s natures have simply been assumed to be ‘like men’s’, i.e., ‘women are sexual animals underneath it all, animals who crave satisfaction -- and the satisfaction they crave is not so much orgasm as sex from a man!’ more

Hite Report on the Family  - Revolutionising the Psyche of Patriarchy (Dr. S. Hite)

This book is a picture, many pictures, of childhood – and a questioning of the identity given to each of us as children.

A significantly different picture of ‘childhood’ emerges from my work than elsewhere – as boys and girls, women and men, ages 8-38*, movingly describe their childhood feelings and experiences. more

Sons and Lovers: A different view of Oedipus(Dr. S. Hite)

Sex is danger, violence is sexy - so we are told! Lurid stories of sexual violence scream at us every day from newspapers, films and videos, TV, magazines, the lives of friends, even our own lives - But where does it come from, the male ambivalence towards women, the impulse towards sexual humiliation or violence more

Affidamento - Trust between women (Dr. A. Samson)

The relationship of entrustment or affidamento is straightforward yet extremely powerful. It is based on the idea that in order for women to define their place in the world they must look to each other as points of reference and value. more
